Message from the Director

Welcome to the Quality and Equity in Surgical Treatment (QUEST) Center at Morehouse School of Medicine.

Morehouse School of Medicine has a long history of pioneering research in surgery, particularly in addressing the unique healthcare needs of underserved populations. The institution's commitment to health equity, diversity, and inclusion has been a driving force behind its research initiatives in surgical care, with an emphasis on improving outcomes for minority and disadvantaged communities.

While MSM is primarily known for its focus on medical education, community health, and public policy, its research efforts in surgery have grown significantly over the years.

At QUEST, we are committed to transforming the surgical experience for all patients, with a steadfast focus on improving both quality and equity in surgical care. Our work is driven by the belief that every patient, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves safe, effective, and compassionate care. We bring together a dedicated community of faculty, clinicians, researchers, and stakeholders to address the complex factors influencing surgical outcomes and their broader impact on individuals, healthcare systems, and communities.

Our mission is to provide high-quality, equitable surgical services not only within Georgia, but across the nation. In doing so, we define quality as care that is safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable, and person-centered — all aimed at improving health outcomes in line with the best available professional knowledge. Equity, to us, means that care should be tailored to each patient's unique needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. This ensures that every patient receives the right care, at the right time, in the right way.

QUEST is built on the expertise and experiences of our Divisions of Acute Care, General, Colorectal and Vascular/Endovascular Surgery. We work to reduce health disparities in surgical care through innovative solutions. Our focus is on developing better treatments, improving access and quality for underserved patients, and building a strong research infrastructure.

Our vision is to become the world’s foremost authority on surgical outcomes, building a community of the healthiest and most satisfied patients. By fostering collaboration and innovation across our four core areas—research, service/advocacy, education, and policy—we aim to lead the way in creating a more equitable and effective surgical landscape for all.

We invite you to join us in this critical work, as we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Sincerely,

Candice L. Alick, PhD
